Integration, chapter III, § 1. Measures on a locally compact space

*Let XX be a locally compact space, KK a compact subset of XX, and (Vk)1≤k≤n(V_k)_{1 \leq k \leq n} a finite covering of KK by open sets of XX. Then, there exist nn continuous mappings fkf_k of XX into [0,1][0, 1], such that the support of fkf_k is contained in VkV_k for 1≤k≤n1 \leq k \leq n and such that ∑k=1nfk(x)≤1\sum_{k=1}^n f_k(x) \leq 1 for all x∈Xx \in X and ∑k=1nfk(x)=1\sum_{k=1}^n f_k(x) = 1 for all x∈Kx \in K.

For, let X′X' be the compact space obtained by adjoining to XX a point at infinity ω\omega (GT, I, §9, No. 8, Th. 4); the sets V0=X′−KV_0 = X' - K and VkV_k (1≤k≤n1 \leq k \leq n) form an open covering of X′X'. Let (fk)0≤k≤n(f_k)_{0 \leq k \leq n} be a continuous partition of unity subordinate to this covering of X′X' (GT, IX, §4, No. 3, Prop. 3); the functions fkf_k with index k≥1k \geq 1 satisfy the conditions of the lemma.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
