— Let φ be a function in K+(G) such that φ(e)>0. Then the set Γφ of measures α∈Γ such that ∫φ(x)dα(x)=1 is compact for the vague topology.
The set Γφ is the intersection of Γ with the hyperplane of M(G) formed by the α such that ∫φ(x)dα(x)=1; since this hyperplane is vaguely closed in M(G) and does not contain 0, it follows from Prop. 1 that Γφ is vaguely closed in M(G). It therefore suffices to show that for every compact subset K of G, one has supα∈Γφα(K)<+∞ (Ch. III, §1, No. 9, Prop. 15). Now, let U be the open neighborhood of e in G defined by the inequality φ(x)>φ(e)/2; since 1=∫φ(x)dα(x)≥∫Uφ(x)dα(x) for α∈Γφ, one sees that, on setting c=2/φ(e), one has α(U)≤c for every α∈Γφ. Let V be a symmetric open neighborhood of e in G such that V2⊂U; let us show that α(Vx)≤c for every x∈G and every α∈Γφ. Indeed, this relation is trivial if Vx does not intersect the support Hα of α; if, on the contrary, there exists an h∈Vx∩Hα, then h=vx for some v∈V, whence
Vx=Vv−1h⊂V2h⊂Uh, and since
δ(h)α=α, it follows that
α(Vx)≤α(Uh)=α(U)≤c. Now let
(xi)1≤i≤n be a sequence of points of
K such that the
Vxi form a covering of
K; it follows from the foregoing that
α(K)≤∑i=1nα(Vxi)≤nc for every
α∈Γφ; Q.E.D.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
