Commutative Algebra, chapter VI, § 5. The topology defined by a valuation

Let KK be a not necessarily commutative field, vv a valuation on KK and GG the group v(K∗)v(K^*) with the discrete topology.

(a) The completion ring K^\hat{K} of KK (with Tv\mathscr{T}_v) is a topological field.

(b) The mapping v:K∗→Gv : K^* \to G can be extended uniquely to a continuous mapping 8:K^∗→G8 : \hat{K}^* \to G. The mapping 00 (extended by v^(0)=+∞\hat{v}(0) = +\infty) is a valuation on K^\hat{K} and v^(K^∗)=v(K∗)\hat{v}(\hat{K}^*) = v(K^*).

(c) The topology on K^\hat{K} is the topology defined by the valuation 00.

(d) For all a∈Ga \in G let Vα,Vα′V_\alpha, V'_\alpha be the subgroups of KK defined by the conditions v(x)>a,v(x)≥av(x) > a, v(x) \geq a. Then the closures V‾α,V‾α′\overline{V}_\alpha, \overline{V}'_\alpha of Vα,Vα′V_\alpha, V'_\alpha in K^\hat{K} are defined by the conditions v^(x)>a,v^(x)≥a\hat{v}(x) > a, \hat{v}(x) \geq a respectively.

(e) The ring of 00 is the completion A^\hat{A} of the ring AA of vv; the ideal of 00 is the completion m^\hat{m} of the ideal mm of vv.

(f) A^=A+m\hat{A} = A + m; the residue field of 88 is canonically identified with that of vv.

To prove (a) it suffices (General Topology, Chapter III, § 6, no. 8, Proposition 7) to show the following: let F\mathfrak{F} be a Cauchy filter (with respect to the additive uniform structure) on K∗K^* for which 00 is not a cluster point; then the image of F\mathfrak{F} under the bijection x↦x−1x \mapsto x^{-1} is a Cauchy filter (with respect to the additive uniform structure). For since 00 is not a cluster point of F\mathfrak{F}, there exists M∈FM \in \mathfrak{F} and β∈G\beta \in G such that β\beta is an upper bound of v(M)v(M). Let a∈Ga \in G. If M′M' is an element of F\mathfrak{F} contained in MM and such that v(x−y)>sup⁡(α+2β,β)v(x - y) > \sup(\alpha + 2\beta, \beta) for x∈M′x \in M' and y∈M′y \in M', then v(x−1−y−1)>av(x^{-1} - y^{-1}) > a for x∈M′x \in M' and y∈M′y \in M' (no. 1, Lemma 1). Whence (a).

By Proposition 1 of no. 1, v∣K∗v|K^* is a continuous homomorphism from K∗K^* to GG and hence can be extended uniquely to a continuous homomorphism 00 from K∗K^* to GG. the Relation

v^(x+y)≥inf⁡(v^(x),v^(y)) \hat{v}(x + y) \geq \inf(\hat{v}(x), \hat{v}(y))

holds in K∗K^* and hence also holds in K^∗\hat{K}^* by continuity. Thus 0 (extended by v^(0)=+∞\hat{v}(0) = +\infty) is a valuation on K\mathbf{K} and (b) is proved.

We now show (d). Let a∈Ga \in G and x∈S,−{0}x \in \mathscr{S}, -\{0\}. For yy in VV, sufficiently close to xx, v^(x)=v^(y)=v(y)\hat{v}(x) = \hat{v}(y) = v(y) and hence v^(x)>a\hat{v}(x) > a. Conversely, let x∈K^∗x \in \hat{K}^* be such that v^(x)>a\hat{v}(x) > a; for yy in K∗K^* sufficiently close to xx, v(y)=v^(y)=v^(x)v(y) = \hat{v}(y) = \hat{v}(x) and therefore y∈Vy \in V, whence x∈Sx \in \mathscr{S}. Thus S\mathscr{S} is the set of x∈K^x \in \hat{K} such that v^(x)>a\hat{v}(x) > a. The argument is analogous for Va′V'_a. This proves (d).

Taking account of Proposition 7 of General Topology, Chapter III, § 3, no. 4, assertion (c) is a consequence of (d). Assertion (e) is a special case of (d). Finally let x∈A^x \in \hat{A}; there exists y∈Ay \in A such that v^(x−y)>0\hat{v}(x - y) > 0; then z=x−y∈m^z = x - y \in \hat{m} and hence x=y+z∈A+m^x = y + z \in A + \hat{m}; thus A^=A+m^\hat{A} = A + \hat{m}, which shows (f).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
